The year is almost over, but there are still several movies that are slated to hit theaters this weekend. Tina Fey’s Mean Girls is back with an updated sequel. Joaquin Phoenix stars as Napoleon Bonaparte in this tumultuous story of his rise to power. Also in theaters is a documentary about the art of Orson Welles.
The Wizard Of Oz
Over eight decades ago, a twister uprooted Dorothy Gale from her sepia-toned rural home and dropped her into a candy-colored fantasy land populated by munchkins, witches, and wizards. MGM’s enduring classic wowed audiences with its wholesome story and innovative Technicolor filming, and it remains popular today.
Along the way, Dorothy meets the Scarecrow who wishes for a brain, the Tin Woodman who longs for a heart, and the Cowardly Lion who seeks courage. The Wizard appoints them rulers of Oz, and Dorothy bids her friends tearful goodbyes as she taps her heels together and repeats “There’s no place like home.”.. Until next time.
Soul
From the psychedelic tones of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s original score to Jon Batiste’s vigorous jazz compositions and arrangements, Soul has a lot going for it. It features Pixar’s first African American lead in Jamie Foxx and codirected by Black playwright Kemp Powers, while its cultural references—from middle-class blackness to the thump of a good jazz club—hit their mark. Even though it’s a little off the grandeur of Pixar’s usual fare, this animated dramedy is worth your time. It shows that finding your purpose isn’t about a single, predetermined goal but about the everyday joys of living. Kids and adults alike will find a kinder, more thoughtful film.
The Lion King
One of Disney’s most beloved classics, The Lion King is a family-centered adventure story and an eye-catching spectacle. The new version is a faithful remake of the 1994 film, but also includes some improvements that are sure to please fans.

It also features a powerful cast, including Matthew Broderick, Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Seth Rogen, and Beyonce Knowles-Carter. However, the film is a bit too faithful to its source material and lacks its own identity. Also, the big death scene is handled in a surprisingly bland fashion. Fortunately, the film makes up for these minor flaws with some amazing voice acting and humor.
Lyle Lyle Crocodile
When he’s not helping his neighbors with their chores, Lyle Lyle Crocodile is the happiest crocodile anyone’s ever seen. But one grumpy neighbor thinks that he belongs in the zoo.
Ambitious magician Hector Valenti (Javier Bardem) discovers a singing baby crocodile in an exotic pet shop and immediately sees the showbiz possibilities. Hector books them into a show, but after the crocodile gets stage fright, they lose their money and their New York brownstone home is sold to the Primm family, whose young son Josh (Winslow Fegley) takes to the reptile right away. However, their curmudgeonly downstairs neighbor Mr. Grumps (Brett Gelman) doesn’t like them having a crocodile living in the attic.
The Beekeeper
The Beekeeper finds Jason Statham kicking the kind of hornet’s nest most action movies would prefer to ignore. The movie starts with a heist at a call center that looks like a cheaper version of the surveillance room in a Bourne flick and traces its obnoxious players all the way to a high-level tech exec. The story is a familiar one, but writer Kurt Wimmer and director David Ayer make it better than it has any right to be. Statham’s kicks and punches are a pleasure, and the audience I saw it with cheered every time the bad guys got their just deserts.
Ghostbusters
Despite being a movie about ghosts, the special effects in Ghostbusters are not what really makes this movie tick. Instead, the film’s comedy and characters are its main features. When Columbia University parapsychology professors Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler see a ghost in the New York Public Library, they start a business investigating and eliminating supernatural phenomena. After a rash of supernatural activity, they hire a fourth member, Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson).
Bill Murray is great as Peter and Dana, but it’s Hudson as the nerdy neighbor that really makes his character shine. This year’s reboot of the classic movie follows a similar formula, spearheaded by humor and strong performances.
Conclusion
Tim Burton’s afterlife comedy gets a sequel with a new plot. Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega star, while Monica Bellucci and Catherine O’Hara return. Tina Fey’s riotous teen classic returns to theaters. Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace and more join the cast.
